Walk Leaders: Melanie and Peter Houlder
For this 6 mile, walk I adapted Ramblers Walk, number 3 from the book '20 Walks in and around Shrewsbury'.
Seventeen people joined Peter and I for this walk. We started at the Abbey Forgate CarPark and walked along the southern bank of the River Severn towards Castle fields. Walking over the river we headed to the Prison built by Thomas Telford and the terminus of the Shropshire Union Canal. Then north past the Flax Maltings (the first metal framed building in the world) towards Mount Pleasant and the old river bed of the Severn. Here we passed the enclosure for some beavers and headed for Hencott Farm and vineyard.
On our journey home we passed through open farm land and a community orchard. It was a walk of contrast, both urban and rural. With lots to see including views across to Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills.
