For the past five years, 'u3a Writers on the Edge' has been collaborating with the Wenlock Olympian Society (WOS) in running a Short Story Competition. Initiated in 2020, the first year of COVID, the Wenlock Olympian Society could not run the annual games due to the need to social distance, hence the short story competition idea was floated; an event that could take place at a safe distance. The founder of WOS, William Penny Brookes, a local doctor of the town in the 1800's, not only promoted physical education as a means to a healthy body for the people of the town but also a healthy mind through the Arts. Writing is very much part of the Arts.
